2017 NAIJA MATHEMATICS CHAMPIONSHIP PRIZE AWARD EVENT

by Muyiwa Gam-Ikon

Being Text of Speech Presented by Andy Akhigbe, Chairman, The Mathematics Laboratory Limited at The Prize Award Event of the 2017 Naija Mathematics Championship, Held at Planet One Events Center, Maryland, Lagos, on Friday, May 12, 2017.

Let me start by thanking everyone who made it here today. On behalf of the organizers of the Naija Mathematics Championship, we are indeed delighted to be hosting the first Prize Award Event in the online assessment of Mathematics in Nigeria for Secondary Schools from JSS1-SS3.

The 2017 Naija Mathematics Championship finally held on Saturday, April 1, 2017, after four postponements – December 10, 2016, January 28, 2017, February 25, 2017, and March 25, 2017.

The major reason for these four postponements was because of the absence of funds to create enough awareness for the Championship.

A break through came by way of a donation of 6 flat-screen TV sets and a cash gift of N1,000,000.00 (One Million Naira) from the MD/CEO of Tino Electronics Limited and another set of 6 educational tablets from the MD/CEO of Cheth Limited.

Without the cash gift of N1M, 6 flat screen TVs provided by the MD/CEO of Tino Electronics and 6 educational tablets from the MD/CEO of Cheth Limited, we wouldn’t have been able to launch the Naija Mathematics Championship in Nigeria.

You all remember that we first introduced the Naija Mathematics Championship through a Press Conference for all stakeholders in Education. After that press conference, we were literally grounded in the area of promotion because of lack of funds. Most of the schools, teachers, students and parents could not be reached as much as we would have wanted to.

Despite all our challenges, below is our performance report:

Total number of schools reached: 70

Total number of schools that responded: 20

Total number of students registered: 250

Total number of students who took the examinations: 224

Total amount of money realized:

224 x N3,000.00 = N672,000.00 (Six Hundred and Seventy Two Thousand Naira only).

THE PRIZE-GIVING EVENT

We have arrived at the final lap of the Championship and it is to be closed today and we are taking a victory lap because we consider our modest efforts a huge success. This wouldn’t have been possible without our sponsors – Tino Electronics Limited and Cheth Limited.

There are 30 prize categories and a cash gift award of N1million to be shared between 18 students who came 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each of the 6 class categories of JSS1-SS3. There are also 6 educational tablets (from Cheth Limited) to the students who came first and 6 flat screen TVs (from Tino Electronics) to be given to the schools with students who came first.

As I close, we look forward to seeing you all during our next prize award event. My appeal goes to all the teachers and parents to continue to support our vision and encourage as many students as possible to always take part in the Naija Mathematics Championship.

Thank you and God bless.
